Substitution How To Use The SAMR Model for Classroom Tasks SAMR and TPCK Models
Short Video that Expalins the SAMR Model
Substitution – Technology acts as a direct tool substitute, with no functional change. Instead of using a paper worksheet for math practice, students would go to an interactive math practice site like IXL. Another example would be using Google Earth instead of an atlas.
Augmentation – Technology acts as a direct tool substitute, with functional improvement. Instead of using a paper test, use the test feature in Edmodo or Socrative. Both will automatically grade the test or quiz. Another example would be using Aleks to practice math concepts as the program adapts to student progress.
Modification – Technology allows for significant task redesign. Interactive tools for concept exploration and visualization. Instead of students just writing an essay, they would not only write the essay and narrate the essay with maybe an original musical sound track playing in the background. This stage transforms the traditional classroom tasks with computer technology. Students would have a personal stake in the work created.
Redefinition – Technology allows for the creation of new tasks, previously inconceivable. Students would create a documentary answering an essential question. Students would work in teams, fostering collaboration. Teams would work on subtopics of the main documentary. Outside sources of information would be expected to be used. In this stage critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity skills would be incorporated.
