We start with roles of the president.  Check out Seven Roles of One President. Keep in mind that the main concern is how can one person, namely the president, able to do all these things?  The answer is that he cannot.  He has to rely on others to help out.

There are several roles that the president plays that are not in the Constitution.  The most often cited one is Party Leader.  Others include:  Chief Negotiator, Opinion Leader, Leader of the Economy, and Crisis Manager.
