All incoming students regardless of major

may submit audition videos for choir, jazz band, and/or rock band ensembles. The Music Department awards scholarships to incoming (including new transfer) undergraduate students,regardless of major, to participate in various music ensembles. Students declaring a major in Music Industry or CS+Music are welcome to submit an audition for a Music Department Scholarship. Students may submit auditions for more than one scholarship. For example, a CS+Music major can audition for both a Music Department Scholarship and also submit an audition video for a Choir Scholarship!

On the form below fill out all fields. Provide a website URL to your audition video, hosted on YouTube, Vimeo, Dropbox, Googledrive, etc... Audition performances must not be edited or overly produced. Songs should be in one take.

    Instructions:
    The Department of Music welcomes all music majors to submit an audition video. Whether you have a traditional music background, or you are have no formal training but have a passion to pursue music seriously for the first time, you can major in music at Lewis! What is your musical story? Singer? Instrumentalist? DJ? Producer? Beat maker? Electronic musician? You are welcome here! To audition for a Music Scholarship, contact the Music Department for details on your audition video.

    Instructions:
    Video record the following. Each of the first three components may be a separate recording. Face the camera and use your best breathing, posture, and tone. For components involving accompaniment, do not use earphones (the accompaniment must be heard when we listen to your audition.)

    1. Sing a C major scale TWICE, ascending and descending, to demonstrate basic tone and tuning.
    You may use solfege syllables, a neutral syllable ("loh" is preferred) or a number system you may have learned in choir.

    First time: Sing with a piano playing your notes, or with THIS VIDEO

    Second time: Sing unaccompanied.

    2. Sing a C natural minor scale TWICE, ascending and descending.
    You may use solfege syllables, a neutral syllable ("loh" is preferred) or a number system you may have learned in choir. For solfege, you may use either "la-ti-do-re-mi-fa-so-la" or "do-re-me-fa-so-le-te-do"

    First time: Sing with a piano playing your notes, or with THIS VIDEO

    Second time: Sing unaccompanied.

    3. Sing a short song of your choice, or part of a song.
    Choose a classical, art song, folk song, hymn or patriotic song, or musical theater song. Sing what fits your voice best. It is not necessary to sing the whole thing. 1 to 3 minutes is sufficient. The song must be accompanied. You may use a pre-recorded track as long as it does not include vocals. If you cannot get someone to play along or pre-record your piano part, email us.

    If you do not have access to solo music, you may sing America (My Country, \'Tis of Thee). This link provides an accompaniment and the lyrics using THIS VIDEO (sing the first two verses from 0:25 to 1:28)

    4. At the end of your video, discuss your music background and explain why you are interested in joining the Choir at Lewis University. Include previous choir experience – when? How long? What vocal part did you sing? Voice lessons, Musical theater, a cappella groups, other school or community singing groups? Do you play any instruments? If yes, how long have you played? You may list band or orchestra experience if applicable.

    Student instrumentalists are invited to create an audition video for a Jazz Band Scholarship. Each of the components may be a separate recording. Face the camera and use your best posture and tone.

    1. Play the following major scales, 2 octaves up and down: C, G, F, B-flat, E-flat.

    2. Drummers, see #3. All others, play a blues or jazz standard (improvisation is not required). If you use an accompaniment track, the accompaniment must be heard when we listen to your audition.

    3. Drummers only: Play 8-16 bars of these basic rhythms: Swing, Bossa Nova, Latin, Jazz Waltz.

    4. At the end of your video, discuss your music background and explain why you are interested in joining the Jazz Band at Lewis University.

    Instructions:
    Vocalists, guitarists, bassists, drummers, keyboardists, brass and woodwind players, DJ artists, rappers, electronic musicians, etc... (if you\'ve seen it on a stage, then it\'s welcome!) are invited to submit an audition video for for consideration.

    Singer: Sing two songs, one slow and one fast. You may use a Karaoke track for accompaniment.

    Guitar: Play major, natural minor, and dominant 7th (mixolydian) scales in the following keys: E, A, D, G, C, F.

    Bass:Play major, natural minor, and dominant 7th (mixolydian) scales in the following keys: E, A, D, G, C, F.

    Drumset: Play 16 bars of a quick 4/4 rock beat, standard funk beat, and a shuffle beat.

    Keyboard:Play major, natural minor, and dominant 7th (mixolydian) scales in the following keys: E, A, D, G, C, F.

    Other: Contact the Music Department for details on your audition video.

    Instructions:
    Gospel Choir welcomes all Lewis students who are interested in exploring and performing a variety of gospel music such as traditional a cappella hymns, anthems, spirituals to urban contemporary and inspirational songs. Gospel Choir is composed of a diverse group of singers and musicians, and a leadership team that helps with the planning of annual events, performances, and workshops. Although Gospel Music includes praise and worship songs, members are NOT required to be affiliated with a church or mandated to have a religious background. Participation in Gospel Choir helps build vocal and performance experience, team collaboration, and awareness of possible careers associated with the gospel and entertainment industry.

    All members of Gospel Choir (singers and musicians) are expected to meet for weekly rehearsals on Mondays at 7pm and to participate in scheduled events or performances. A choir calendar will be provided monthly each semester and designated uniform attire should be followed.

    Singer: Sing a short song of YOUR choice, or part of a song. Choose a gospel song, an inspirational song or hymn… (Some Examples: "Amazing Grace", "His Eye is On The Sparrow", "I Smile"-Kirk Franklin, "Take Me to The King"-Tamela Mann, "The Blessing"-Kari Jobe, "You Know My Name"-Tasha Cobb, "Made A Way" -Travis Greene, "I Need You Now"-Smokie Norful) Sing what fits your voice best.     Musician: Send a video of yourself playing C Major and C Minor Scale. Include one full song (preferably a gospel song, an inspirational song, or hymn)... Record a song you play the best.

    Everyone: At the end of your audition video, discuss your musical background and explain why you are interested in joining the Lewis University Gospel Choir (LUGC).
    • Singers, include previous choir experience – when? How long? What vocal part(s) do you sing? Voice lessons, musical theater, a cappella groups, and other school or community singing groups?
    • Musicians, include previous playing experience – when? How long? What instrument(s) do you play? Are you able to read sheet music or do you play by ear?
